Five Year Plan
Long Term
Long term goal (2 years ) is to complete my CS endorsement and possible transition to another school where STEM focus is needed or possible developed. Partner with a company to bring more programs and course selections to increase STEM interest and pathways to college and career opportunities in STEM. Facilitate coding courses for students that will provide some real-life perspective around STEM.
I am anticipating an opportunity in the near future to facilitate a Computer Science for my school. There is a new initiative in the state”CS4ALL” to implement on required CS class for all high school students. I am hoping to be a part of that shift on new instructors to bring forth this endeavor at my school.
I have been currently expanding my network to create my own PLN so that I can take advantage of different opportunities in the future. One ways is to participate in outside professional developments and event that will increase my exposure to other educator who are expanding their learning networks.

Setting Goals: Instrumental Versus Missional Thinking
Short Term Goal
My goal is to begin leading the work in my building regarding STEM engagement. Our school currently needs some form of interest to attract students. The military model is fine however something to address the interests that match the generation of students that we serve. For example lead and organize the hour of code next year to reach more students. Secondly, take the professional development courses required to facilitate a Computer Science mandate per the district. I am currently taking my first class, Introduction to Programming I, to receive an endorsement in Computer Science (CS). I want to become more technologically savvy to address my somewhat lagging skills. I can then implement more technology into my classroom instruction to increase student learning and engagement.

ROCKING THE BOAT
Task Zero Review
In the book “Rocking the Boat” the writer tries to describe the underlying motivation for invoking change. The author describes how people use different strategies to communicate, initiate an action that will create a radical shift in thinking around a stance, viewpoint, or preconceived notion that tends to amplify difference versus similarities. The book gives a very detailed definition of this idea of a “tempered radical” as someone who is not exactly the leader and extreme in behaviors and personal philosophy however as people who are “everyday leaders who are essential agents of organizational learning and change “( Meyerson p. 17). The book describes several ways tempered radical use to invoke change by resisting quietly, turning personal threats into opportunities, impact through negotiation, and organizing collective action. In every strategy that the author gives detailed evidence though stories and action that describe how each strategy is used in various situations.
Task One How Am I Different?
Meyerson describe three ways of being different and I feel I can relate to all three aspects. Social identity is a source of difference specifically one in the way of my race. I am African American and have always throughout my life experience of being “different “. Growing up in various communities and attending predominately white schools in my early years has always left me feeling like an outsider. Feeling like I don’t fit in or cannot compete. At an early age that only strategy was to be the best academically. Then in my college years attending again predominately all white university – I was say I was more of an out-right radical! I would speak up more confidently in my education courses about educational disparities, participate in student marches and protests.
As an educator in Chicago Public Schools, my students may feel the same way when it is time to decide on their post-secondary goals. Our students tend to choose colleges where they do not have to struggle with social identity. Students make decisions based on how well they can adjust or address their social identity difference. I understand how student feel when they are not sure about the choices they are making and how their social identity plays a role in their success. My goal is use my experience as a tool to move beyond their fears and doubts and give them strategies when they encounter a challenge regarding their social identity.
Task Two, Becoming a Tempered Radical
I have learned over the years you get more with “sugar than vinegar” and in the book the author several strategies that invoke and address the changes needed for a better outcome or organization. I see myself as always someone who quietly resist. Usually I try to figure out how the situation can work for me without conforming completely at the same time staying true to myself. For example, administration want to see certain instructional mandates in the mathematical classes, instead of disregarding the mandate I had to figure out how this can work in my classes without losing my educational philosophy and strategies that have been successful.
My goal is to move toward the idea of “ turning personal threats into opportunities”. I tend to shy away from this because I usually want an immediate outcome or solution. However, based on the book this strategy require a little more thought, patience and timing. Using this strategy requires self-reflection to determine is the desired outcome worth the struggle. Six factors need to be considered before pushing through your personal threat. With busy work and life demands I am going to lean towards using this strategy to determine which conflicts to work through or which struggles to leave alone.
Task Three, Facing Challenges
In review the four levels of challenges I see myself experiencing frustration and burnout. I currently feel this way because of the ever-changing climate of CPS. It seems like the value of my role of an educator is being diminished. The current policies and actions that are being mandated by my administration is a direct result of the leaders of CPS. It has created a level of frustration and burnout that I have been considering a change in the next couple of years. In my role I feel that I don’t bring any wisdom or expertise to my classroom instruction. In the role of tempered radical, sometimes the more you try to be a change agent the more of an outcast you become. So at this time the being a tempered radical calls for some reflection as to stay or simply cut your losses and make a change.
IN THE ROOM
Leadership is a life long journey in discovering your best self and uncovering the best in those you lead. It's a tremendous responsibility and should be approached honestly, openly , and always reflective in the purpose of creating change for a better outcome!!
